Elope The Formalities

Whatever you do, Don’t elope the Celebration! Not all weddings are done in the traditional sense. This one in particular for Nancy and Jeremy where we saw the couple elope in February and celebrate in May!

I Was Referred

Once I started to talk with Nancy and Jeremy, I found out that this wasn’t going to be your Average Social. They didn’t know that my services provided them with an opportunity to share in some special moments. Even though my referral was coming from one of their friends (whom I had worked with for their own social 3 years prior) that’s where the process stopped. I then picked it up from there.

After a couple of emails, I knew that the referral wasn’t going to be enough. They had in mind, like most, that hiring a DJ was hiring someone to simply show up and play music. When we began to discuss pricing I knew I needed to talk to them one on on in order to properly show and explain to them what I truly had to offer.

They agreed to meet over a cup of coffee down at the Johnson Terminal. There we could finally get a proper feel for one and other. They told me their story on how they got together. I had a chance to listen.

What Made This Night Special

Jeremy and Nancy decorated the Henderson Hwy Legion with red. Red table cloths, red table settings and red attire. A romantically engaged night was definitely on the books. Jeremy being involved in graphics designs, professionally printed all the materials from the tickets to the bar signage (where he proudly displayed the high end spirits chosen for the evening).

I knew prior that I had to find a way to share their unique story for all of their friends and family. I wasn’t going to find out this information from an Email. I needed to meet them. I needed to make sure that I was going to be able to gather enough information to properly craft an introduction and presentation of their story.

I was able to obtain everything I needed after having them answer a few questions. During the event, I made it a point to talk to their guests by letting them know I was there for them. I was there to take their requests so they could enjoy themselves.

Something For Momma

After gathering everyone into the same room, I introduced the couple formerly as husband and wife. It was my honor to be one of the first people to do so. Before they took to the dance floor for their first dance, I was able to present their story to the crowd. It wasn’t a long winded speech, but just enough to connect everyone emotionally to their love.

Afterward their first dance Jeremy’s mother was called up for a dance he chose just for her.

It was a very special moment, that fit so nicely. We then had everyone step forward and joined them for a little Red Wine by UB40 followed up by Kool and the Gang’s – Celebration: and did we ever Celebrate! We kept the floor moving all night long (with a small break for food). By the end, I knew we had really created a special night.

It was an honor, and I am very proud to say I get to do this for a living. Not everything we get to do in life gets to make an impact the way we want it to. For that I am truly grateful!

Top 5 Reasons You Should Meet Your DJ

Not everyone knows how much impact a DJ service can have on an event. Have you been tasked with finding one for your event? The following 5 Reasons why you should connect with your DJ; may just set your event up for success from the first meeting.

1) They Should Be On the Same Page As You

Did you have a chance to discuss your personal music tastes? It is your event after all. You should be given the opportunity to customize anything you may feel necessary. You may not know what options available to you. Do they know who your VIPs are? Will they offer the you a chance to further organize some of the events you are planning throughout the celebration?

2) You Should Know who is Representing You

How serious is this person? Are they doing it for the quick $? I hope not. But How would you know if you never meet this person? I’m not saying that all DJs are in it for the monetary value, but a few of them are. Ever been to an event where the DJ looked bored, texting, Facebooking and just not engaged? Do you think their level of professionalism could be pointed out by them offering to meet with you?

3) Finding out their experience

It may be a good idea to see what their experience is regarding your particular type of event. Are they a Wedding DJ? A Club DJ? A Social DJ? How many weddings have they performed at? At what kind of level were they involved in? Do they have the motivation to ensure you and your guests are taken care of? What is their plan to engage the audience? Whatever it may be, it should line up with what you expect of them.

4) Receive Personal Commitment

Knowing what it means to participate in your Celebration should be an honor. Is that how they feel? Is that the kind of commitment they are going to give to you?

5) Open the Doors to a True Celebration

Having a consultation should allow you open the door to possibilities that require a personal touch. If someone has made it this far into your process, maybe there possibility exists. Can it be possible that this person is on the same page, will have enough experience, enough commitment, to represent and be apart of your Celebration Experience? Will they offer ideas, and solutions to some of the things you are thinking of planning?

A meeting or initial consultation should leave you at ease. You should feel confident that they will offer services you need. For the investment you want to make in them, I think it is worth every minute getting to know them. This one service; above all the rest, can be the determining factor that will hold your event together.

Average Will Not Cut It

Death to Average Socials

Have you ever gone to a social out of courtesy? Ever been to a social where you heard the same songs played the same way? What about sitting down at a long table with a few strangers not knowing how they knew the couple? Or how about not knowing many people there at all? I think we all have 🙁

What would make things more engaging?

From the moment you have a ticket in your hand, you should already know what kind of event you are in for. The best way I’ve seen this done is ‘Personalized Tickets’. A ticket in my hand with a fun/funny picture of the couple that I am inevitably helping, I know they want to have a good time.

At the tables, I would love to see a couple of pictures of the couple engaging in some of their favorite things, or why not some old school pictures of themselves? Really. How hard would it be to create a Walmart Photo Center account to print out a handful of 4×6 pictures to place on the tables? 80 pictures at $0.10 each would go such a long way. And that’s not to say that you have to have 80 different pictures. Maybe 10-20 and make duplicates. Done.

What about your favorite things to do?

Are you competitive? Why not bring something to the social that can really help them get engaged? Beer Pong, Flip Cup, or even a Video Game area would be a lot of fun to bring you above average! If competition is not your thing, why not a photo-booth? You can rent the service out, or you can ask someone in your wedding party to help out.

And we haven’t even talked about the music and DJ yet. Although they will be on hand for entire night, they should know that you want more! They work with what you give them. If you give them average, they have to work harder to bring that level up a notch. If you start ‘above average’ then you have a better chance of success. If you want the best chance at anything, you could hire a company that helps you stand out right from the beginning (oh wait, you’re only a couple steps away from that!)

What is DJ Your Life all about?

These writings are meant for anyone who is interested in seeing what types of events are out there. My hope is to inspire the reader to do more with their Celebration. Not only will I bring forward some of the great elements that worked, but I will also show where things could have been done better. The majority of the information that I will write about will be from personal experiences and my own research and inspiration that I would like to pass on. I’ve been apart of events of all kinds such as Weddings, Socials (for those who are in Manitoba (or Jack and Jills in Ontario)), Parties and Receptions of all kinds!

I want anyone who is going to be hosting an event of any grandeur, to achieve a uniquely entertaining experience.

Who is DJ Steven P?

I am a person who has been experienced in playing the right songs at the right time, with the confidence of being on the microphone and has been formally trained in Project Management.

I started at the bottom and worked my skill sets to a point where I am now offering premium services for anyone who is happy, caring, spontaneous, bravely committed to successful outcomes.

The attempt is to post regularly about of the highlights from my events so that you can cultivate some ideas of your own to make your event ‘pop’!
